The 2026 twin earthquakes in Venezuela – two especially powerful tremors – created disaster and chaos by impacting much of northern Venezuela’s coastal area. The two large tremors produced shaking in areas never experienced previously in Venezuela. Buildings collapsed from large cracks throughout their structural framework. Twin Earthquakes Shake Venezuela Within Seconds
On Wednesday night, two large earthquakes struck Venezuela and are being referred to by earthquake experts as a “doublet” because they occurred very close together from both a time and distance perspective. The first earthquake occurred approximately 168 kilometers west of Caracas, Venezuela near the area of Moron at a depth of 22 kilometers with a magnitude of 7.2. The second earthquake (also near Moron approximately 16 kilometers present at a depth of 10 kilometers) occurred less than one minute after the first earthquake; it was a magnitude of 7.5 making it even stronger than the previous earthquake. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), these earthquakes are among the largest earthquakes to ever occur within Venezuela in over one hundred years.
Northern Venezuela Faces Widespread Destruction
Parts of northern Venezuela suffered huge amounts of damage from earthquakes – especially in La Guaira state located north of Caracas.
Numerous buildings fell down, roads were ruined and lost power in a lot of locations. Many people had to spend the night outside due to the earthquakes; they either wanted somewhere safe or were desperately trying to find missing family members.
Witnesses have relayed that what they saw was traumatic.
“Cracked walls were falling apart,“ one person said. “Then things on the ceiling started dropping, everyone had to run out.“
Another person recalls that the shaking was getting stronger and longer, so therefore there was widespread confusion.
Casualties Increase as Search Efforts Continue
As search and rescue efforts continue to extend into the disaster zones, the number of fatalities continues to rise. From initial estimates of dozens of fatalities and hundreds of injuries, officials have now confirmed that there are at least 235 fatalities and over 1500 people have been injured.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquakes were expected to result in extensive property damage and likely a large number of casualties based on the strength and shallow depth of the earthquakes.
Additionally, officials believe that there are a large number of people trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings.
Countries Around the World Join Relief Mission
The United States has sent search and rescue teams along with medical support and humanitarian aid to assist in disaster relief efforts. France, Spain, Germany, Turkey, and Mexico have all offered assistance.
Germany has said it is sending six military transport planes to help with the transportation of rescue teams and emergency supplies. Turkey and Mexico have also pledged further assistance while teams continue doing search and rescue.
Brazil borders Venezuela, and the Brazil Government confirmed that two Brazilians lost their lives as a result of the disaster, and the Government will provide whatever assistance is needed to the families.
Smartphone Alerts Gave Some Residents Precious Seconds
As Venezuela does not yet have a national EEW system, many people in the country received alerts on their Android devices via the Google Android EEW system. The Google EEW system utilizes sensors on Android devices that sense seismic activity and send an alert to the nearest Android device. The Google EEW system presently issues alerts for dozens of earthquakes per month, and it sends alerts to billions of devices around the world. A very short warning time may allow people to safely evacuate from dangerous areas before being affected by an earthquake.
Infrastructure and Communications Face Major Challenges
Venezuela’s infrastructure has grown increasingly unstable due to the earthquakes recently occurring. There is great concern by those involved in the shipping industry, particularly shipping operations, ports, and the trade routes that support the exchange of goods will face disruptions over the coming weeks – this increase in uncertainty will likely push up insurance rates and create logistical challenges.
At least as far back as this month, Starlink (the satellite-based internet service provided by SpaceX) has offered its existing customers one month of free service to assist with restoring connectivity to areas most affected by the earthquakes. Additional terminals/towers will be deployed to these affected areas so as to ensure all customers can easily re-establish connectivity through Starlink.
International Support Grows as Rescue Operations Intensify
Rescue operations are now underway with help from several countries, including the United States, Mexico, Turkey, France, Spain, Germany, and Brazil. The US said it is deploying search-and-rescue teams and humanitarian support, while Germany said it is ready to send military aircraft if requested.
Mexico also sent rescue workers and medical personnel, and Starlink said it would offer free service and work to restore connectivity in the hardest-hit areas. Brazil confirmed that two of its citizens died in the disaster, while governments continue to offer assistance to affected families.
Power Outages and Fear Grip Affected Communities
While Venezuela does not have an official early warning system for earthquakes, some had received advanced alerts via Google’s Android Earthquake Alerts system minutes before they experienced any shaking . Some reported being terrified by the shaking, which resulted in power outages and residents spending the night outside, looking for family members who were trapped under rubble.
Witnesses to the destruction described collapsed staircases, cracked walls and people attempting to escape the buildings through emergency exits as they collapsed. The damage was so severe in many locations that authorities stated that those populations will be operating in an emergency-response mode for an undetermined period of time.
